Abstract:

We study a system with many parallel service stations. Upon
arrival, a job is routed to the queue of a station following a balanced
routing scheme: choose a few stations with specific probabilities and then
send the job to the one with the shortest queue. We derive the diffusion
limit of the system and show that the balanced routing control is asymptotic
optimal in the sense that it minimizes the workload over all time in the
diffusion limit.

Biography:

Hengqing Ye received the PhD degree from the Hong Kong University of Science
and Technology in 2000. He had been an assistant/associate professor with
the School of Business, National University of Singapore during 2000-2007,
and is an associate professor with the Faculty of Business, Hong Kong
Polytechnic University. His research interests include the modelling and analysis of stochastic
network models and logistics systems. He has published research papers in
