In addition to his current position at CUHK, Dr. Hsiao-Wuen Hon holds adjunct professorship at Harbin Institute of Technology in Harbin, Shanghai Shanghai Jiao-Tong University in Shanghai, University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Huazhong University of Science & Technology in Wuhan, and Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.

Dr. Hsiao-Wuen Hon is a general manager of Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). He is supervising research in information retrieval, data mining, information retrieval, speech, natural language processing, multimedia search and newly established search technology center (STC). In addition to research activities, Dr. Hon manages all MSN/Live Search product development in China. Before joining MSRA, Dr. Hon was the Architect in Natural Interaction Service Division at Microsoft Corporation; overseeing all architectural and technical aspects of the award winning Microsoft(r) Speech Server product (Frost & Sullivan's 2005 Enterprise Infrastructure Product of the Year Award, Speech Technology Magazine's 2004 Most Innovative Solutions Awards and VSLive! 2004 Editors Choice Award.), Natural User Interface Platform and Microsoft Assistance Platform. Dr. Hon joined Microsoft Research as a senior researcher at 1991 and has been one of the key contributors of Microsoft's SAPI and speech engine technologies. Before joining Microsoft, Dr. Hon worked at Apple Computer, Inc., where he was a principal researcher and technology supervisor at Apple-ISS research center. Dr. Hon led the research and development for Apple's' Chinese Dictation Kit, which receives exceptional reviews from many industrial publications and a handful of prestigious rewards, including Comdex Asia'96 Best software product medal, Comdex Asia'96 Best of the Best medal and Singapore National Technology award.

Dr. Hon received the B.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University; and M.S. & PhD degrees in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. While at CMU, Dr. Hon is the co-inventor of CMU SPHINX system on which many commercial speech recognition systems are based on, including Microsoft and Apple. Dr. Hon is an international recognized speech technologist and has published more than 100 technical papers in various international journals and conferences. He also co-authored the "Spoken Language Processing" book that has been used as a graduate-level textbook and reference book in the area of speech technology in many universities all over the world. He has also been serving as chairs and reviewers for many international conferences and journals. Dr. Hon holds 36 patents in various technical areas.
