Lam Kai Pui received his B.Sc. (Eng) (Electrical Engineering, HKU), M.Phil. (Electronics, CUHK), and D.Phil. (Engineering Science, Oxford University) in 1975, 1977, and 1980, respectively. He then joined the Information Science Section of the National Research Council in Ottawa, Canada, where he worked on research projects in CAD/CAM, adaptive control, and machine intelligence. His interests in teaching led him to join the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia in 1987. He returned to Hong Kong in 1991 to take up a position of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Systems Engineering of CUHK. Prof. Lam has a broad research interest and published in the areas of adaptive control, computational intelligence, knowledge-based systems, and their applications in microprocessor systems and financial systems. He obtained research funding supports from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Earmarked Grants from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, the UK/HK Joint Research Scheme. Prof. Lam had initiated several knowledge engineering projects with a primary focus on industrial collaboration and technology transfer, including AICAMS (Artificial Intelligence Crime Analysis and Management System) with the Hong Kong Police. More recently his research has focused on using FPGA (field programmable gate array) in bioinformatics and neuronal dynamics and on intra-daily information in financial volatility forecasting.
