Course Code and Name: SEEM3550 Fundamentals in Information Systems

Course Objectives:


Basic elements of information systems, their concepts and interrelations. Database systems: database models, relational database, database application programming. Information retrieval: models, indexing, performance evaluation. Expert systems: knowledge and data engineering, expert system shell, application studies.


Course Outcomes:


1.      Able to perform conceptual database design using Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD).

2.      Able to perform logical database design by transforming a ERD to a relational database table

3.      Learn how a relational database table are maintained on secondary disk storage,

(P1) Students are given 3 assignments to teach them how to apply their knowledge to practical problems. The assignments contribute to 15% of the scores in the course.

(P3) Students have to do a database design project, which contributes to 35% of the scores in the course.

(P5) The database design project is divided into 3 phases: function design (10%), database design (10%) and implementation (15%). Students are requested to apply what they have learnt in class to a real problem.

(P11) Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is used for phases 1 and 2; and Oracle Database System is used for phase 3.

(P13) During the project, students learnt how to deign and implement under the application constraints. Their outcomes of each phase are separately evaluated.
