Conference Tour (Star Cruise) to Hainan Island

A Star Cruise conference tour to Hainan Island, referred as a “treasure island”, will be organized after the conference from December 19 to December 21, 2001. Hainan Island is the China's second-largest island after Taiwan, located in the South China Sea, at about the same latitude with Hawaii. It covers 3,135 sq. miles, and has a population of 5.6 million consisting of various ethnic groups including Han, Li, Miao and Hui. It has been referred to as a "treasure island", with an abundance of tropical crops such as coconuts, rubber and lemongrass, and rich in aquatic products and mineral resources.

Hainan has a vast primeval forest containing 40 percent of the country's rare plant species, and a rich variety of wildlife lives in the jungle. It is the home of more than 80 species of animal and 340 varieties of bird. The rarest animal is the Hainan deer which is protected by the state. On the Nanwan Peninsula in southern Hainan, 600 rhesus monkeys live in 16 groups in an official rhesus monkey reserve.

Located on the southern-most tip of the Hainan Island is the lovely seaside city of Sanya. Sanya enjoys a mild tropical climate with abundant sunshine and colourful flowers in bloom throughout the year. Reputed to be an excellent resort city, Sanya attracts thousands of visitors all year round to its beach resorts. One can also find some of China's most beautiful pearls in Sanya where pearl cultivation is an important industry.
