Biography
Prof. Janny Leung obtained an S.B. degree in Applied Mathematics from Radcliffe College of Harvard University, an M.A. in Mathematics from Oxford and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before returning to Hong Kong in 1996, she was a faculty member at Yale University and the University of Arizona.
She is a Fellow of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS), a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (Informs), a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. She is a Life Member of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge.
Her main research interests are combinatorial optimization, transportation, logistics and operational research. Her recent research focus has been on humanitarian logistics, transit scheduling and public transport for smart cities. Her research has been well-supported by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and the (U.S.) National Science Foundation. In Hong Kong, she has collaborated with local companies/organisations on projects involving workforce scheduling, facility layout, air cargo operations, public transit planning and hospital emergency-room operations. She has been invited as plenary speaker at major international conferences, most recently at the national conference of the Operational Research Society of China in 2022, and as the IFORS Distinguished Lecturer at the 2021 EURO conference. She serves on the editorial boards of the leading journals in her field, including Transportation Science, Operations Research, European Journal of Transportation and Logistics, Naval Research Logistics, etc.
Prof. Leung is active in her profession, having served on the scientific/organising committees of major international conferences, and on various selection panels and committees in several professional societies. She served on the Engineering Panel of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (2011-2016) and the Hong Kong Logistics Development Council (2014-2020), and was an assessor for the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission (2009-2020). She was the President of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS) for 2022-2024.
Prof. Leung is passionate about teaching and residential college education. She received the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award in 2004. While at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, she was affiliated with Shaw College (1999-2012) and was the founding Dean of Students and Deputy Master of Morningside College (2009-2016). She was the founding Master of Shaw College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (2016-2019). From 2019 to 2025, she was the Master of Choi Kai Yau College at the University of Macau where she was also a professor at UM’s Faculty of Business Administration and the State Key Lab of Internet of Things for Smart City.
In her spare time, she enjoys rowing, hiking and travelling, having visited all seven continents.
