CHEUNG Kui Wong
SEEM Year 4
I participated in the Fintech Career Accelerator Scheme (FCAS) Gap Year Placement Programme offered by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), serving as a Placement Student in the Platform Services & Operations Team in IT Department from July 2025 to the present (expected completion in June 2026) in Hong Kong. I discovered this opportunity through university career services and applied directly via the HKMA’s online recruitment portal, drawn to its focus on fintech talent development in a regulatory and innovative environment. This experience significantly advanced my professional growth by providing real-world exposure to IT operations in the financial sector, deepening my skills in automation scripting (PowerShell, Bash, AppleScript), cloud platforms (AWS), DevOps tools (Jira, Confluence, GitLab, vCenter), and Ansible playbooks, while conducting regular platform health checks to ensure system stability and performance—bridging my academic knowledge in system engineering with practical problem-solving and ownership in a high-stake setting. One valuable insight I gained is the critical role of proactive monitoring and collaboration in maintaining reliable fintech infrastructure, reinforcing my passion for technology-driven solutions in finance and preparing me for future roles in dynamic engineering environments.

SEEM Year 5
I would like to share my internship experience. I proactively searched for internship opportunities on the HSBC Group (HK) career website and applied for the placement program. From July 2024 to June 2025, I gained valuable exposure to the banking industry through internships at HSBC Group. At Hang Seng Bank, I supported the Wholesale Transformation team by assisting project managers in identifying business needs and developing detailed test cases to improve relationship manager workflows. Later, I joined HSBC Commercial Banking division and contributed to digital channel development projects, including SEO optimization and content strategy for the Business Go Platform. These experiences allowed me to apply my SEEM course knowledge in real business contexts, sharpen my analytical and communication skills and deepen my understanding of banking industry. I strongly encourage students to pursue internships to broaden their perspectives and apply what they have learned in practical settings.

SEEM Year 6
I completed a one-year student placement programme at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) during the academic year 2024-25. I have learnt about this opportunity through the university’s email.
The internship contributed significantly to my academic, professional, and personal development. As an SEEM student, I was able to apply academic concepts such as system architecture, databases, and programming skills to actual operational environments. This helped me understand how large-scale systems are designed, maintained, and monitored in real-world settings.
Secondly, the internship enhanced my technical and workplace skills. During the one-year programme, I worked in three different roles, which allowed me to gain practical experience in system documentation, supporting daily IT operations, and analysing system-related issues.
Moreover, the internship improved my adaptability and independence. I learned to manage my time effectively, prioritise tasks, and seek clarification when needed.
Overall, this internship was valuable to me as it allowed me to complement my academic knowledge with practical experience.
