Current Status: Technology Associate at Morgan Stanley

My major is Financial Technology, which is under the department of SEEM. The programme covered a broad variety of topics, from financial mathematics to information systems. It offered me ample exposure in both finance and technology, as well as the combination of these two subjects, that is, applying the latest technology in the financial world. The training in this programme has also strengthened my analytic skills and attention to details. These knowledge and skills helped me secure a job in one of the top-tier investment banks in the world, Morgan Stanley. My current role is a technology associate under the Institutional Securities Technology Department, where I am responsible for developing and optimizing the Fixed Income Risk Calculation System in the firm.

If I had a second chance, I would still choose this programme to study in my university life. It has taught me a lot and paved my professional career path.

Current status: Preparing to study for a master’s degree in Japan

If you want to study an engineering program but do not want to be limited to one or two fields, then SEEM is absolutely suitable for you. Here, you will not only learn algorithms and programming languages, but also gain in-depth understanding of system engineering principles and practices from multiple perspectives, including system design, data processing, development, operation, and management. In the real world, talents who are good at management and possess engineering skills are in short supply. At this point, practical knowledge of system engineering and engineering management will come in handy.

In addition, not only does the program offer a wide range of industries to work in after graduation, but the training provided by the SEEM program also offers more choices for my future studies compared to other engineering programs, such as business management, computer science, and data science.

I hope you can choose the subject you like and have a wonderful university life!

I enrolled as a full-time student in the SEEM Master’s programme and I am extremely happy about the choice I made.

The SEEM programme enabled me to strengthen my knowledge in Engineering Management, Operations and Logistics and broadened my understanding of Financial Engineering and IT.  Courses were taught by extremely well prepared teachers, and tutors were very supportive and active in helping students with internship and job applications.

Last but not least, this experience in Hong Kong literally opened my eyes on the whole APAC region, not only from a business point of view, but also from a social and cultural perspective.

I found my interests in project management through my work in the past few years, while I was also interested to have basic knowledge of finance and logistic. Thus, I chose M.Sc. in SEEM, which offers a wide range of courses including project management, financial analysis and securing trading, logistics and data mining, etc.

Besides regular lectures, the programme offers different kinds of seminars and workshops  such as interview and dressing skill, sharing by experts and leaders from logistic and banking industries and company visits which have broadened my horizon.

In addition to the enhancement of both my knowledge and horizon, I have gained valuable and thorough experience in teamwork building. I also had chances to complete projects with classmates from different cultures including mainland and oversea.

M.Sc. in SEEM is definitely a master programme I would highly recommend it to my friends.

I started my internship in BMT Asia Pacific in February 2012. I took  internship because I wanted to enhance my hands-on experience in the business world and my communication skills. Therefore, at the beginning of my internship I told my lecturer in charge that I really wanted to learn more and I would work hard on my job.

Since BMT is a global consulting firm, I have learnt a lot during my internship. I started with tasks like data collection, information researching from which I learnt some useful information channels.

When I was free, I had chances to read some project reports written by full time colleagues . I  learnt – their way of thinking and writing styles. After I had grasped the basic understanding about the project in which I was involved, I started making cold calls to different Asian countries which was the most thrilling part of my internship. This cold call experience has made me more confident in talking with others. Apart from the works  mentioned above, I also assisted in organizing workshops for projects and I had a chance to meet business leaders in logistics industry. They shared their views about the logistics industry in Hong Kong and how they face the current situation.  I was also given a chance to draft some parts of project reports after I had learnt by myself how to write a report in BMT format.

After this wonderful internship, I have gained more than I expected. From this internship, I met a lot of excellent colleagues. I am now more confident of the business world and to begin my new journey in Finland. I wish everyone of you can enjoy your school years in Hong Kong. It is a nice place to be there and learn!

My internship experience was unique and rewarding. Working in a logistics company helped me understand the real practice of logistics operations a lot better. I would really thank the department for making such an exclusive arrangement for SEEM students.

I worked in Hankyu Hanshin’s warehouse in Interlink, a warehousing complex situated near the Kwai Tsing Container Terminal No.9. It was great to work in such a huge warehouse dealing with tons of goods everyday. Co-ordinating the manpower in the warehouse is really a very practical skill that cannot be acquired at school, but it’s essential for a logistics practitioner.

Combining the practical skills obtained from the internship with my past experience in the logistics team of a leading engineering consulting firm, I am confident and well-prepared for stepping into the industry.

As a graduate of the SEEM Department, I have learned a lot of knowledge in many areas which are truly constructive to both my career and research development. Unlike traditional engineering programmes which emphasis on teaching professional engineering topics, SEEM nurtured me all-round ranging from engineering management principles,, financial concepts to information technologies. These kinds of knowledge are basic and a must for us to have in this competitive and global business environment. Now, I am a business analyst in an international express company and definitely I can tell you that the knowledge that I derived from SEEM is vital for my career development. I truly believe that SEEM is a wise choice for you.

Studying in SEEM at CUHK has become one of my happiest time. Through this 3-years course, I have learnt programming techniques, logical thinking, and most importantly the cooperation skills of working with people in the business.

I started my career in HSBC working as a System Analyst Programmer. I was responsible for project development and  supporting issues. SEEM trained me to be able to adapt quickly to a new environment. In the business world, you are always expected to complete every task in a very tight schedule.

As I moved on to be a Senior IT Officer, I needed to take the tasks of both a coordinator and a developer. It’s challenging to work with different parties, but it’s fascinating to have project completed successfully. It requires a good combination of communication , coordination and interpersonal skills, with which SEEM already provided  me.

I would like to conclude that SEEM is a good choice for your personal growth and future career as well.

Working at the technology group of a global investment bank requires both high quality of work and speedy delivery of results– this is the truth I genuinely realized during my internship at J.P Morgan. I was assigned to the Equity Derivatives Group – Rapid Application Development team, which develop light-weight applications on top of gigantic databases using RAD methodology.

Over the last ten years, cutting-edge technologies have completely reshaped the market landscape; from high frequency trading to complex derivatives, the omnipresence of technology in banking has made this industry more dynamic than ever. Increasingly stringent and diverse regulatory requirements in APAC have also put much constraint on the systems we operate – that’s why there is an ongoing effort to change our IT strategy for the next 5 years.

Throughout my internship at J.P. Morgan, I worked with very talented people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. However, what really impressed me most was the amount of trust bestowed upon me – I was given maximum freedom in the design of my software and could escalate issues to senior management should I felt necessary. By the end of the internship, several strategic teams in EMEA and APAC even invited me to present to them the technologies I had used  since they are also interested in them.

It is a culture that encourages honest opinions and rewards hard work; as such, even interns can expect to make an impact. In my opinion, this is the ideal workplace for technology students like me.
