Professor Helen Meng has been elected one of the inaugural Distinguished Lecturer of APSIPA (Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association) 2012-2014. The APSIPA Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) is an educational program that promotes the research and development of signal and information processing in Asia Pacific region. Particular attention is given to the specific needs of academia, and professionals in industry and government in developing countries. The appointment of distinguished lecturer is an honour to recognize the technical achievement, expertise and leadership of an individual.

SEEM participated in hosting the IBM EX.I.T.E. Camp to attract talented girls to enter the engineering field.

SEEM has long been a strong supporter of initiatives that encourage talented girls to enter the engineering field. The IBM EX.I.T.E. Camp was established in 1999 with this aim. Over 10,000 participants around the world have joined the EX.I.T.E. camp, with 85% of them indicating that they are interested in furthering their studies in engineering and science subjects. SEEM students won in Future Science Park – Dandelion Cross-Strait Business Plan Contest.

Future Science Park – Dandelion Cross-Strait Business Plan Contest was held in Zhejiang University from 3 to 9 July 2012. The contest was organized by Zhejiang University with the aim of promoting innovation and academic exchange among the students from cross-strait universities. A total of thirteen teams from universities in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau participated in the competition. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) won the Second Prize and there were only two teams received this award.
The team of CUHK comprised Chau Tsz Fung, Wong Cheuk Wing and Law Kin Fun, from the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. Under the guidance of Prof. Wong Kam Fai, Director of Centre for Innovation and Technology and Associate Dean (External Affairs), Faculty of Engineering, Mr. Zhou Lanjun, postgraduate student of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, their award-winning project is about an intelligent system on public transportation. The idea is to provide accurate, reliable and timely information to passengers such as the distance between the next bus and the bus stop, arrival time, bus speed, as well as the updated number of passengers. A final-year SEEM student received a dream-offer from an international investment bank.

The Department is very glad to learn that a final-year SEEM student has recently received a dream-offer from an international investment bank carrying the job title of Graduate Analyst with the annual salary of around HK$400K.
His responsibility will be to build up mathematical models and develop software for option pricing.
