Professor Anthony Man-Cho So received the SIAM Review SIGEST Award

Professor Anthony Man-Cho So, together with Dr. Shixiang Chen (former SEEM PhD student), Professor Shiqian Ma (former SEEM academic staff), and Professor Tong Zhang received the SIAM Review SIGEST Award for their paper

Proximal Gradient Method for Nonsmooth Optimization over the Stiefel Manifold. SIAM Journal on Optimization 30(1):210-239, 2020.

The paper was recommended by members of the SIAM Journal on Optimization editorial board and the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, and was selected by the SIAM Review team for the importance and impact of its contributions.

About the award:

In each issue of SIAM Review, which is the flagship journal of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the SIGEST section contains an outstanding paper of general interest that has previously appeared in one of SIAM’s specialized research journals; the issues rotate through the journals. A paper from SIAM Journal on Optimization is chosen for the SIGEST award once every three to four years. The purpose of SIGEST is to make the 10,000+ readers of SIAM Review aware of exceptional papers published in SIAM’s specialized journals.

Competition on System Modeling & Optimization (COSMO) 2023

COSMO 2023 is co-organized by the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Department (SEEM) and The Hong Kong Association for Computer Education (HKACE) for all high school students.The purpose of this competition is to encourage students to actively study mathematics and hence tries to improve their ability in building system model, use of mathematical method and computer technology to solve problem.

2nd Runner-up in CILTHK Student Day 2023

The Chartered Institutions of Logistics and Transportation in Hong Kong (CILTHK) Student Day is an annual event that brings students together and aims to give students a deeper understanding of the local logistics industry through a case study competition.    

This year, the Student Day was held on 11th March, 2023 in HKU with 7 participating institutions from Hong Kong. The CUHK team, which consisted of our students (TONG Kwan Ho; NG Tsz Wing; YIP Pui Yan; XUE Feiyang; HUR Juhee) supervising by Prof. Daniel Long, had tackled and presented the topic “How have the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine been reshaping the global seaborne trade routes of the energy commodity market?” very well and won the 2nd Runner-up.

The INFORMS Undergraduate Operations Research Prize Competition is held each year to honor a student or group of students who conducted a significant applied project in operations research or management science, and/or original and important theoretical or applied research in operations research or management science, while enrolled as an undergraduate student. The prize is given each year at the Annual Meeting.
